Holiday Self-Care

As thanksgiving has passed we are now entering the holiday season full force. There is shopping to be done, cards to send out, cooking, baking, parties, decorating, cleaning, entertaining…the list goes on.

Remembering to take care of yourself is sometimes a struggle on an ordinary day but add in all the holiday extras and it becomes super easy to forget to stop and take time for yourself. Then I’ll tell you what happens, well at least this is what happens to me. I give to others, I’m out of my routine and overstimulated and all of the sudden I’m running on empty and I’m cranky over anything and everything. Sound familiar? Then other people get cranky and it’s just fun all around! Moods can be contagious.

So how can we make sure to take time for ourselves, especially during this holiday season? I am going to get my calendar and schedule things for myself each day. Some days I can take more time for myself than others but every day I am committing to taking at least 30 minutes to myself. Even if I have to wake up early or go to bed later. And along the way I will listen to my body and adjust when needed.

Something I usually do every morning as part of my non-negotiable is yoga. Even if it's only 10-15 minutes, it centers me. However my brother sleeps on the couch when he visits, I usually do yoga in the living room so I didn’t want to wake him up. For Christmas I just need to remember to bring my yoga mat down to the basement! Our house gets a little crowded for the holidays but that doesn’t mean I can’t take time for myself. I just have to plan ahead of time and maybe be a little creative with the where and when. AND most importantly I will not feel guilty for needing some time to myself!

How will you make sure to take time for yourself this holiday season?
